Help at Home Data Breach Investigation

Help at Home is a healthcare provider based in Illinois. Today, Help at Home provides a wide range of home care services to seniors and individuals with short- and long-term disabilities, including meal planning and preparation, light housekeeping and laundry, bathing and grooming, errands, transportation, companionship, respite care, Alzheimer’s and Dementia care, and hospital to home care. Additionally, Help at Home offers in-home nursing services as a health care solution for individuals who need post-operative care or are living with chronic illnesses.2 These services include pre- and post-operative care, orthopedic care, medication management and administration, wound care, diabetic care, blood draws, catheter changes, IV therapy, and more. Currently, Help at Home provides these services in 12 states and 190+ locations with the help of 49,000 caregivers who have relationships with 66,000 clients monthly.3 Help at Home is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Help at Home announced that one of its former vendors had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on March 21, 2024, Help at Home was informed that one of its former third-party vendors had experienced a data breach involving Help at Home information.

Through its investigation, the third-party vendor learned that sensitive personal information belonging to Help at Home may have been viewed and taken by an unauthorized actor. As a result, the third-party vendor began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Financial account number
  • Username and password
  • Medical information
  • Treatment information
  • Health insurance information

 

As a result of the data breach, Help at Home posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on August 16, 2024, Help at Home mailed data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice on its website, Help at Home will be providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
