The New Jewish Home Data Breach Investigation

Founded in 1848, The New Jewish Home serves adults of all faiths, ethnicities, and income levels.3 Today, The New Jewish Home provides specialized short-term rehabilitation in partnership with Mount Sinai Health System, NYU Langone Health and Burke Rehabilitation Hospital.3 These services include person-directed long term skilled nursing, adult day health care, geriatric care management, and senior housing.3 Headquartered in New York, New York, The New Jewish Home has campuses in Manhattan and Westchester, senior housing in the Bronx, and employs over 1,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, The New Jewish Home reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on January 7, 2024, The New Jewish Home detected suspicious activity within its network environment. As a result, The New Jewish Home launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, The New Jewish Home learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized actor. As a result, The New Jewish Home began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On July 17, 2024, The New Jewish Home concluded this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Passport information
  • Financial information (e.g., financial account information, payment card information)
  • Medical information (e.g., medical record information, medical treatment information)

 

On August 16, 2024, The New Jewish Home began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, The New Jewish Home is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
