Summit National Bank Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Summit National Bank (“Summit”) regarding its recent data breach. The Summit data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to over 10,000 individuals.

ABOUT SUMMIT NATIONAL BANK:

Summit is a bank based in Wyoming. Founded in 1984, Summit offers a variety of financial products and services to individuals, including checking and savings accounts, money market accounts, Certificates of Deposit, IRAs, and digital banking.3 Additionally, Summit provides a variety of loans such as mortgages, home equity lines, agriculture, personal and auto loans, and business and commercial loans. Headquartered in Hulett, Wyoming, Summit has three additional locations in Idaho and Montana, and employs over 10 individuals.3

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Summit reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on May 15, 2024, Summit detected suspicious activity within its an employee’s email account. As a result, Summit launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Summit learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and acquired by an unauthorized actor between May 13 and May 16, 2024. As a result, Summit began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On July 12, 2024, Summit concluded this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Contact information
  • Financial account information

 

On August 16, 2024, Summit began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Summit is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
