Park Dental Data Breach Investigation

ABOUT PARK DENTAL:

Park Dental is a dental group based in Minnesota. Founded in 1972, Park Dental provides complete preventive dental care to patients of all ages, including toddlers, children, adults and seniors.2 Today, Park Dental’s services include preventive dentistry, such as dental exams, x-rays, cleanings, and sealants. Additionally, Park Dental offers restorative services, cosmetic procedures, and advanced services, including crowns, fillings, veneers, teeth whitening, dental implants, root canals, extractions, TMJ treatment, and more. Park Dental has over 50 practice locations throughout the Twin Cities, greater Minnesota, and western Wisconsin areas, and employs over 1,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Park Dental announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on January 23, 2024, Park Dental detected suspicious activity within certain employee email accounts. As a result, Park Dental launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Park Dental learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized actor using certain employee email accounts between January 11 and January 23, 2024. As a result, Park Dental began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On June 10, 2024, Park Dental completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license information
  • Demographic information
  • Full access credentials
  • Financial information (e.g., account information, payment card information)
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information

 

As a result of the data breach, Park Dental posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, Park Dental has mailed data breach notification letters to impacted individuals.
