Texas Electric Cooperatives Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Texas Electric Cooperatives (“TEC”) regarding its recent data breach. The TEC data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

ABOUT TEXAS ELECTRIC COOPERATIVES:

TEC is a statewide association that represents electric cooperatives in Texas.2 Founded in 1941, TEC advocates for cooperatives in the Texas Legislature, the U.S. Congress and state and federal regulatory agencies.3 Additionally, TEC serves its members by providing products and services that help sustain cooperative businesses in the 21st century.3 Today, TEC represents the interests of 76 electric cooperatives with more than 3 million members throughout the state.3 Headquartered in Austin, Texas, TEC has an additional location in Texas and employs over 250 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On August 13, 2024, TEC reported to the Attorney General of Texas that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party. As of August 14, 2024, details of the breach have not been made publicly available by TEC. While not much is known about the breach, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number

 

As a result of the data breach, TEC began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. A link to the breach report filed by the Attorney General of Texas is below.
