Delta Health System Data Breach Investigation

ABOUT DELTA HEALTH SYSTEM:

Delta Health System is a hospital and healthcare system based in Mississippi. Founded in 1953, Delta Health System is positioned to handle emergencies by providing Level III Emergency Trauma service, delivering care in both inpatient and outpatient settings and providing treatment through home health and hospice, outpatient rehabilitation and therapies, surgery, physician clinics and many other levels of service.2 Providing care for seven counties in Mississippi, Delta Health System specializes in a variety of medical fields, including cardiology, gastroenterology, hematology, nephrology, oncology, obstetrics, pediatrics, urology, wound care, and more. Headquartered in Greenville, Mississippi, Delta Health System has multiple locations in Mississippi and employs over 500 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Delta Health System announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on January 21, 2024, Delta Health System detected suspicious activity within its computer network. As a result, Delta Health System launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Delta Health System learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been exposed to an unauthorized actor between January 15 and January 21, 2024. As a result, Delta Health System began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:    

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Contact information
  • Driver’s license or state ID number
  • S. alien registration number
  • Financial account number
  • Medical information (e.g., treatment/diagnosis information, prescription information, provider name, medical record/case number, Medicare/Medicaid ID number)
  • Health insurance information
  • Treatment cost

 

On March 20, 2024, Delta Health System posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, Delta Health System plans to mail data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice on its website, Delta Health System will be providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
