Crown Equipment Corporation Data Breach Investigation

Crown is a lift truck manufacturer and material handling company based in Ohio. Offering a broad range of forklifts, as well as automation and fleet management technologies, Crown designs, manufactures, distributes, services and supports material handling products.4 Founded in 1945, Crown designs and manufactures up to 85 percent of its lift truck components, including key parts like motors, drive units, and electronic modules.5 Headquartered in New Bremen, Ohio, Crown has more than 500 retail locations and over 20 manufacturing facilities across the world and employs over 10,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Crown reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on June 9, 2024, Crown detected suspicious activity within its computer network. As a result, Crown launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Crown learned that sensitive personal information in its systems related to employees and their family members may have been exposed to an unauthorized actor on June 8, 2024. As a result, Crown began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:           

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Financial account information
  • Health information

 

On August 9, 2024, Crown began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Crown is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
