King Arthur Baking Company Data Breach Investigation

King Arthur is a baking product company based in Vermont. Founded in 1790, King Arthur was the first flour company in the United States. Today, King Arthur sells a variety of baking goods and products, including flour, ingredients, baking mixes, gluten-free alternatives, kitchen tools, bakeware, and pans. Additionally, King Arthur offers both in person and online baking classes to individuals for a range of baking goods such as bread, cookies, pies, and more. Headquartered in White River Junction, Vermont, King Arthur has baking school locations in Vermont and Washington and employs over 200 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, King Arthur reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on or around June 29, 2023, King Arthur detected suspicious activity within its computer network. As a result, King Arthur launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, King Arthur learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized actor between June 23 and June 29, 2023. As a result, King Arthur began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:             

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Financial account information

 

On July 20, 2023, King Arthur mailed data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Then, on August 9, 2024, King Arthur mailed additional notices containing updated information. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, King Arthur is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
