Evening Post Publishing Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Evening Post Publishing, Inc. (“Evening Post”) regarding its recent data breach. The Evening Post data breach involved sensitive personal information belonging to over 15,000 individuals.

Evening Post is an independently held, family-owned media company based in South Carolina. Founded in 1803, The Post and Courier is the oldest newspaper in the South and the second oldest in the United States.3 In the 1990’s The Post and Courier’s parent company Evening Post Publishing, Inc. began purchasing community newspapers across the state of South Carolina which laid the groundwork for a unified state-wide media company.2 Today, in addition to The Post and Courier newspaper, Evening Post publishes Aiken Standard, Summerville Journal Scene, The Gazette, The Berkeley Independent, Moultrie News, The Star, Free Times, Georgetown Times and Kingstree News.2 Recently the Evening Post has expanded its statewide reach under its brand in Greenville, Columbia, Myrtle Beach, Spartanburg, Hilton Head, and Florence adding local dedicated journalists in each market.2 Evening Post is headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Evening Post reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on March 20, 2024, Evening Post discovered suspicious activity in its computer systems. As a result, Evening Post launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Evening Post learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised between March 13 and March 20, 2024. As a result, Evening Post began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes: 

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Financial account information
  • Credit card information

 

On July 8 and August 8, 2024, Evening Post mailed data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Evening Post is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
