Peco Foods Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Peco Foods, Inc. (“Peco”) regarding its recent data breach. The Peco data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to over 48,000 individuals.

Peco is a family owned and operated poultry company based in Alabama. Founded in 1937, Peco supplies a broad range of products and services to national restaurant chains, regional food service distributors, retail grocers and international accounts.2 These poultry products include par-fry, individually frozen, marination bag and blast, wings, deboned white and dark meat, bone-in dark meat, and mechanically separated chicken. Headquartered in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Peco has additional locations across Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi, and employs over 7,500 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Peco reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, upon learning an unauthorized third party had accessed its systems, Peco launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident. As part of its investigation Peco learned that an unauthorized third party accessed this sensitive information on or around December 4, 2023.

After learning that sensitive data was compromised. Peco began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On May 23, 2024, Peco finalized this review. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by Peco. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license or state identification card number
  • Account number, credit card number or debit card number
  • Account passwords or personal identification numbers or other access codes

 

On July 24, 2024, Peco began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notices sent to Maine residents, Peco is providing some impacted individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
