Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Compex Legal Services, Inc. (“Compex”) regarding its recent data breach. The Compex data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 28,700 individuals.

Compex is a legal services and record retrieval company based in California. Founded in 1972, Compex provides a variety of services to businesses, including record retrieval and summarization, claims insight, court reporting, case management services, and independent medical examination interface solutions. Today, Compex serves more than 500 insurance companies and 4,000 law firms nationwide.2 Headquartered in Torrance, California, Compex has over 35 offices across the United States and employs over 500 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Compex reported to the Attorney General of California that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice posted on its website, Complex detected suspicious activity on its network on April 17, 2024. After launching an investigation to determine the nature of the incident, Compex learned that an unauthorized third party accessed and acquired this sensitive information starting on April 9, 2024.
After learning that sensitive data was compromised. Compex began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While this review is still in progress, Compex revealed that the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Medical information (e.g., diagnosis and treatment information, medical record number)
- Health insurance information
As a result of the data breach, Compex plans to mail data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. A link to the form breach notification letter that Compex filed with the Attorney General of California and on its website is below.
