Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine Data Breach Investigation

Burrell College is a four-year, private osteopathic medical school with campuses in New Mexico and Florida.2 Founded in 2013, Burrell College’s medical curriculum integrates foundational biomedical and clinical knowledge and instills the principles and philosophy of osteopathic medicine.3 Today, Burrell College offers an array of resources which includes a hybrid gross-virtual anatomy laboratory, a standardized patient facility, and high-fidelity standardized mannequins to support of the development of the skills necessary to become an osteopathic physician.3 With a primary campus located in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Burrell College has an additional campus in Melbourne, Florida, and clinical training locations in New Mexico, El Paso, Texas, Rockledge, Florida, and Tucson, Arizona.2

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Burrell College discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, Burrell College determined that an unauthorized third party accessed this sensitive information on January 26, 2024. On July 11, 2024, Burrell College began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of personal information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license information
