Seitz Insurance Agency Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Seitz Insurance Agency (“Seitz”) regarding its recent data breach. The Seitz data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 1,200 individuals.

Seitz is a is a full-service independent insurance agency serving Eastern Montana and Western North Dakota.2 Founded in 1961, Seitz offers a variety or insurance products to individuals, including auto, boat, and motorcycle insurance, property insurance, and life and health insurance. Additionally, Seitz provides commercial insurance products to businesses such as business auto, builder risk, business interruption, commercial property, general and professional liability, group health, surety, umbrella and excess coverage, and workers’ compensation. The businesses and operations that Seitz serves includes the agricultural community, as it provides customized insurance solutions that include auto and equipment, crop, general liability, life and health, livestock, property, transportation, and workers compensation. Headquartered in Sidney, Montana, Seitz Insurance employs over 10 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On December 4, 2023, Seitz discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Seitz determined that an unauthorized third party accessed this sensitive information through an employee’s email account between December 4 and December 8, 2023. On July 10, 2024, Seitz began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of personal information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Individual taxpayer identification number
  • Financial information (e.g., account number, payment card number, payment card access information)
  • Medical information (e.g., medical condition or treatment information)
