The Steere House data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

Steere House is an independent non-profit healthcare organization based in Rhoad Island. Founded in 1874, Steere House serves adults who require skilled, restorative, and long-term care services within a secure and caring environment.3 Additionally, Steere House provides educational and research experiences that enhance the care of those it serves.3 The services provided to patients by Steere House includes assistance with dressing, 24-hour nursing care, medication management, emergency response system in rooms, mental wellness programs, on-site physical and occupational therapy, nutrition and meal service, relocation assistance, and monthly family group meetings. As a teaching facility, Steere House also offers on-site real-world experience to Brown University Warren Alpert School of Medicine Geriatric Fellows and Medical students, University of Rhode Island Pharmacy interns, hands-on nursing opportunities for Community College of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College, and many others.4 The Steere House facility is located in Providence, Rhoad Island.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On March 11, 2024, Steere House discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Steere House determined that an unauthorized third party accessed this sensitive information though an employee’s email account between February 29, 2024, and March 11, 2024. On July 2, Steere House began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license number
- Credit or debit card number with expiration date and security code
- Medical information (e.g., diagnosis, lab results, prescriptions)
- Health insurance information
