Newton Centre Dental is a dental practice based in Massachusetts. Today, Newton Centre Dental offers a long list of surgical and nonsurgical dental procedures to promote healthy smiles, including dental exams, dental cleaning, sealants, emergency dental care, tooth extractions, full-mouth reconstruction, dental bridges, dental crowns, tooth fillings, scaling and root planting, and root canal therapy.3 Additionally, Newton Centre Dental provides an array of cosmetic dental services, such as veneers, teeth whitening, bonding and contouring, plus restorations (bridges and crowns), and Invisalign®. Headquartered in Newton, Massachusetts, Newton Centre Dental has one location.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On June 21, 2023, Newton Centre Dental was informed by its administrative service provider, Affinity Dental Management, that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, Newton Centre Dental determined that an unauthorized actor gained access to this sensitive information through an employee’s email account between May 27, 2023, and June 21, 2023. On March 8 and May 24, 2024, Newton Centre Dental notified individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license number
- Passport number
- Taxpayer ID number
- Financial information (e.g., account information, billing information)
- Medical information (e.g., treatment cost, treatment location, mental or physical condition and treatment, procedure type, doctor’s name, diagnosis, treatment information, treatment type, treating/referring physician, prescription information, diagnosis, diagnosis code, dental imaging, patient ID number, medical record number, admission date)
- Health insurance information
