Ascension Cybersecurity Investigation

Ascension is a non-profit, Catholic healthcare system based in Missouri. Founded in 1999, Ascension operates more than 2,600 sites of care – including 140 hospitals and 40 senior living facilities – in 19 states and the District of Columbia, while providing a variety of services including physician practice management, venture capital investing, investment management, biomedical engineering, facilities management, clinical care management, information services, risk management, and contracting through Ascension’s own group purchasing organization.2 In FY2023, Ascension provided $2.2 billion in care of persons living in poverty and other community benefit programs.3 Headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, Ascension employs over 10,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On May 8, 2024, Ascension discovered that it had experienced a cybersecurity incident impacting the functionality of its systems and disrupting clinical operations. On the same day, Ascension posted a notice on its website saying, “…we are working to fully investigate what information, if any, may have been affected by the situation. Should we determine that any sensitive information was affected, we will notify and support those individuals in accordance with all relevant regulatory and legal guidelines.”1 As of May 9, 2024, Ascension has not disclosed the specific nature of the cybersecurity incident and whether the incident resulted in a data breach.
