ABOUT GUARDANT HEALTH, INC.:

Guardant is a biotechnology research and precision medicine company based in California. Founded in 2012, Guardant is dedicated to helping patients at all stages of cancer live longer and healthier lives through the power of blood tests and the data they unlock— from informing better treatment in patients with advanced cancer, to new ways of monitoring recurrence in cancer survivors, and screening to find cancer at its earliest and most treatable stage in the general population.2 With over 500,000 blood tests performed by 12,000 doctors to date, Guardant’s commercially available tests help inform treatment decisions for patients by holding insights that can improve clinical outcomes.3 Headquartered in Palo Alto, California, Guardant employs over 1,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Guardant discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive protected health information in its systems may have been accessed or acquired. Through its investigation, Guardant determined that certain personal information related to samples collected in late 2019 and 2020 was inadvertently made available on a publicly accessible online platform by an employee in October 2020. Between September 8, 2023, and February 28, 2024, the file was copied by an unidentified third party. As a result, Guardant began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Age
  • Medical record and identification numbers
  • Medical information (e.g., treatment information and dates, test results)
