GreenWaste Data Breach Investigation

The GreenWaste data breach involved personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

Founded in 1991, GreenWaste specializes in all aspects of material collection, processing, and sales, tailoring its service offerings to the unique needs of customers and communities, and helping to shape the evolution of the solid waste and recycling industry.2 Today, GreenWaste works directly with more than 20 municipalities, over 50 jurisdictions, and operates highly regulated facilities in over 10 locations across California.2 Headquartered in San Jose, California, GreenWaste employs over 1,000 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, GreenWaste discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, GreenWaste determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information between November 22 and November 27, 2023. As a result, GreenWaste began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license number
- Financial account information
- Health insurance information
- Medical information
