Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (“RPI”) regarding its recent data breach. The RPI data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 1,700 individuals.

RPI is a private research university located in Troy, New York. Established in 1824 as The Rensselaer School, RPI offers over 140 undergraduate, graduate, doctoral programs, as well as programs and certificates for working professionals across a variety of academic fields, including: architecture, engineering, science, humanities, arts, and social sciences. One of the oldest technological research universities in the U.S., RPI enrolls approximately 7,000 students annually and has more than 110,000 living alumni. Competing in the NCAA as the Engineers, RPI has 23 intercollegiate athletic teams and employs more than 1,000 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On November 17, 2023, RPI learned that one of its vendors, Athletic Trainer System, had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information may have been accessed and acquired. The incident investigation determined that an unauthorized third party may have accessed this sensitive information between January 2020 and January 2021. On February 1, 2024, RPI began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Medical information
- Photograph
