National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (“NBOME”) regarding its recent data breach. The NBOME data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 4,000 individuals.

ABOUT NATIONAL BOARD OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICAL EXAMINERS:

NBOME is an independent, nongovernmental, nonprofit organization based in Pennsylvania. Founded in 1934, NBOME works to protect the public by providing the means to assess competencies for osteopathic medicine and related health care professions. To that end, NBOME produces a number of osteopathically distinct assessments and partners with other organizations on their assessment programs.4 Today, NBOME’s Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX-USA) is the examination series universally accepted for osteopathic physician licensure in the United States, and also is recognized by physician licensing authorities in numerous international jurisdictions.5 Headquartered in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, NBOME has an additional location in Chicago, Illinois and employs more than 50 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, NBOME discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, NBOME determined that an unauthorized third party may have accessed this sensitive information between February 4 and February 13, 2023. On January 31, 2024, NBOME began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license and/or government ID card number
  • Passport number
  • Financial information (e.g., credit and/or debit card numbers, bank and/or financial account information)
  • Medical information (e.g., diagnosis and treatment information, medical record number)
