SMART Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating the International Association of Sheet Metal Air Rail Transportation Workers, known as SMART, regarding its recent data breach. The SMART data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to over 62,000 individuals.

SMART is a labor union that represents workers in various industries, including sheet metal, air transportation, rail transportation, and related fields. Accordingly, SMART offers its 216,000 members employment benefits, political advocacy, pension, and transportation benefits. With approximately 700 local unions and councils in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, SMART coordinates the union’s activities from Washington, DC and Cleveland, Ohio.2 Founded in 1888, SMART was formed through the merger of the Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association and the United Transportation Union. Today, SMART is one of North America’s most dynamic unions with over 10,000 employees.3

WHAT HAPPENED?

On September 9, 2023, SMART discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, SMART determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed and acquired this sensitive information on or around September 9, 2023. On November 10, 2023, SMART began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Financial account information
