Sun Life Financial Data Breach Investigation

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, a vendor of Sun Life Financial, Pension Benefit Information, LLC (“PBI”), discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, PBI determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed and acquired the sensitive information belonging to Sun Life Financial customers through a vulnerability in the MOVEit file sharing platform used by PBI between May 29 and May 30, 2023. On August 21, 2023, Sun Life Financial began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
