Throughout the state, the Ohio History Connection operates numerous museums, historic sites, and archives. Additionally, Ohio History Connection conducts educational programs, publishes books and resources about Ohio’s history, and offers various resources for researchers, educators, and the general public interested in learning about the state’s history. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Ohio History Connection has over 200 staff members and 50 historic sites throughout the state.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On July 9, 2023, Ohio History Connection discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Ohio History Connection determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information through a ransomware attack. Additionally, the investigation determined that the sensitive information impacted belonged to current and former Ohio History Connection employees and vendors. On August 23, 2023, Ohio History Connection began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
- W-9 reports
