Teachers’ Retirement System of Georgia Data Breach Investigation

Accordingly, Teachers’ Retirement System of Georgia offers a defined benefit retirement plan (401A) which guarantees a monthly benefit based on members’ final average salary and service. In accordance with laws enacted by the Georgia Legislature, Teachers’ Retirement System of Georgia manages the retirement accounts of 277,000 active members and pays a monthly benefit to 137,000 retired members and survivors. Each year, the Teachers’ Retirement System of Georgia retiree payroll exceeds $5.4 billion.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On May 29, 2023, PBI Research Services, a third-party vender of Teachers’ Retirement System of Georgia, discovered that it experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information of Teachers’ Retirement System of Georgia retirees and beneficiaries may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Teachers’ Retirement System of Georgia determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information through a vulnerability in the MOVEit file transfer platform used by Teachers’ Retirement System of Georgia between May 29 and May 30, 2023. Recently, Teachers’ Retirement System of Georgia posted a notice of the breach on its website and began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Teacher’s Retirement System ID number
