Maximus Data Breach Investigation

Maximus is a government services company that contracts with government agencies to manage and administer government programs. Founded in 1975, Maximus specializes in public health, clinical services, appeals and independent medical reviews, eligibility and enrollment, and technology consulting services. Among the programs administered by Maximus are Medicare, Medicaid, welfare-to-work, and student loan services. At the federal, state, and local levels, Maximus allows governments to implement health and human service programs rapidly in different communities. With 39,000 employees, Maximus generates $4.35 billion in annual revenue.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On May 31, 2023, Maximus discovered that Progress Software Corporation had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information of individuals who participate in various government programs managed by Maximus may have been accessed. While the investigation is ongoing, Maximus determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information through a vulnerability in the MOVEit file transfer platform developed by Progress Software and used by MaximusMaximus plans to contact individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Personal information
  • Social Security number
  • Protected health information
