TRS is a public-pension fund which offers teachers in New York City retirement, disability, and death benefits. Accordingly, educators are eligible for TRS membership if they work for the New York City Department of Education, the City University of New York, or participating New York City Charter schools. WHAT HAPPENED?
On May 29, 2023, PBI Research Services, a third-party vender of TRS, discovered that it experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information of TRS employees may have been accessed. Through its investigation, TRS determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information through a vulnerability in the MOVEit file transfer platform used by TRS between May 29 and May 30, 2023. On July 18, 2023, TRS began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Address (e.g., city, state, zip, prior city of residence)
