Athene Annuity and Life Company Data Breach Investigation

Headquartered in West Des Moines, Iowa, Athene partners with Apollo Insurance Group Solutions, a global alternative asset manager, for retirement services asset management. Founded in 2009, Athene has grown from a startup to a company with $257.7 billion in total assets.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On June 20, 2023, Athene discovered that a third-party vendor used by Athene, Pension Benefit Information, LLC (“PBI”), had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. PBI provides audit and address research services to companies, including to Athene. In order to perform this research, Athene shares sensitive data about consumers with PBI. While the investigation is still ongoing, PBI determined that an unauthorized actor have accessed the sensitive information belonging to Athene’s customers through a vulnerability in the MOVEit file transfer software used by PBI between May 29 and May 30, 2023. On July 14, 2023, Athene began contacting customers whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Social Security number
