Washington State University Data Breach Investigation

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Washington State University discovered that National Student Clearinghouse, Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association, and UnitedHealthcare, three third-party venders used by the Washington State University, experienced data breaches in which the sensitive personal identifiable information of Washington State University students may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Washington State University determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information through a vulnerability in the MOVEit file transfer application between May 29 and May 31, 2023. On July 12, 2023, Washington State University posted a notice of the data breach on its website. That website notice states that Washington State University expects that National Student Clearinghouse, Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association, and UnitedHealthcare will contact impacted individuals directly. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Address
