Clearwater Credit Union Data Breach Investigation

Based in Missoula, Montana, Clearwater Credit Union serves the surrounding counties, including Beaverhead, Deer Lodge, Jefferson, Missoula, Powell, and Silver Bow. Among the services offered by Clearwater Credit Union are savings accounts, checking accounts, certificates of deposit, personal loans, auto loans, and mortgages. In order to best serve its clients, Clearwater Credit Union has more than 30,000 ATMs and shared branching at over 5,000 credit unions nationwide.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On June 14, 2023, Clearwater Credit Union discovered that one of its venders experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information of Clearwater Credit Union clients may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Clearwater Credit Union determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information through a cyber-attack on the MOVEit file transfer software used by the third-party vender between May 30 and May 31, 2023. On June 30, 2023, Clearwater Credit Union began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
