MJ Care Data Breach Investigation

MJ Care is a Midwest therapy staffing and related billing services company. As a staffing service, MJ Care places qualified physical therapists, occupational therapist, speech pathologists, and registered nurses in places where they are needed, like schools, clinics, hospitals, long-term care settings, and home health settings. Additionally, MJ Care offers billing and consulting services to schools, simplifying the Medicaid reimbursement process. Founded in 1977 by Mary Van Lare, a physical therapist, MJ Care is recognized as a Woman Business Enterprise. Located in New Berlin, Wisconsin, MJ Care employs approximately 600 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, MJ Care discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, MJ Care determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed the sensitive information belonging MJ Care’s clients between May 31 and June 24, 2022, through an employee email account. On December 29, 2022, MJ Care began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Financial account information
  • Biometric information
  • Health insurance information
  • Medical information (e.g., date of service, treatment/diagnosis information, provider name, medical record number, general medical information)
