Hanger Clinic Data Breach Investigation

Through its 875 clinic locations, Hanger Clinic offers customized orthotic and prosthetic solutions to people with amputations, limb differences, neuromuscular disorders, and other musculoskeletal abnormalities. Hangar Clinic is the patient care segment of Hanger, Inc., a publicly traded company headquartered in Austin, Texas. Teter Orthotics & Prosthetics is a subsidiary of Hanger Clinic. Headquartered in Traverse City, Michigan, Teter Orthotics & Prosthetics provides its patients with orthotic and prosthetic care through its 12 Michigan clinic locations.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On October 11, 2022, Hanger Clinic discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in Teter Orthotics & Prosthetics’ systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Hanger Clinic determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information through a Microsoft 365 account of a Teter Orthotics & Prosthetics employee. Recently, Hanger Clinic began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Date(s) of service
  • Medical record number
  • Treatment history
  • Prescription information
  • Health insurance information
  • Driver’s license number
