Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Macmillan regarding its recent data breach. The Macmillan data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to over 19,000 individuals.

Macmillan is a partnership between Macmillan Publishers, Macmillan Learning, and MPS. As such, Macmillan is known for its book publishing and educational resources, including textbooks, digital learning modules, and educational programs. With roots going back to a London publishing house established in 1843, Macmillan has a long history of publishing literature, and educational materials. Accordingly, Macmillan has published materials by many famous authors and academics, including John Maynard Keynes, Lewis Carroll, Winston Churchill, Margaret Mitchell, and Jack London. In 1869, Macmillan opened its first office in the United States, expanding its operations into the new American market. After expanding through several mergers and acquisitions, Macmillan was bought by a German publisher in 1999 and rebranded to its current form in 2007. Today, Macmillan and its affiliates operate in more than 70 countries and employ over 1,000 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Macmillan discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Macmillan determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed sensitive information. On December 1, 2022, Macmillan began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
- Financial information
