SSTAR Data Breach Investigation

SSTAR is a healthcare provider that specializes in substance use disorders and complications. Founded in the late 1970s as an alcohol detoxification clinic, SSTAR expanded its services over the next two decades in response to the AIDS crisis, implementing drug use treatment programs and primary care services. Today, SSTAR treats over 5,000 patients each year, offering inpatient and outpatient counseling, medication, chronic disease management, and more. Headquartered in Fall River, Massachusetts, SSTAR operates clinics in in Fall River and one in Cranston, Rhode Island.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On September 26, 2022, SSTAR discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, SSTAR determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed and obtained this sensitive information on October 14, 2021. On November 11, 2022, SSTAR began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Government identification number
  • Financial information (e.g., account number)
  • Health insurance information
  • Medical information (e.g., dates of service, diagnosis or treatment information, medication information)
