Founded in 1955, The New York Horse Racing Association began by taking control of these tracks, centralizing ownership of New York horse racing. Today, The New York Racing Association operates three racetracks, facilitates betting, and works to improve safety for both horse and jockey. Headquartered in Jamaica, New York, The New York Horse Racing Association employs more than 1,000 individuals and runs some of the biggest horse races in the country, such as the Travers Stakes in Saratoga Springs, New York, and the final race of the U.S. Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, in Belmont Park, New York.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On June 30, 2022, The New York Horse Racing Association experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, The New York Horse Racing Association determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed and obtained this sensitive information by launching a ransomware attack. On September 9, 2022, The New York Horse Racing Association began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license number
- Username or password information
- Health insurance information
- Health records
