Samaritan’s Purse Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Samaritan’s Purse, regarding its recent data breach. The Samaritan’s Purse data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to more than 2,900 current and former employees.

ABOUT SAMARITAN’S PURSE:

Samaritan’s Purse is a humanitarian aid organization that prioritizes Christian missionary work and evangelism alongside its direct aid and program funding. Founded in 1970 by a Baptist pastor, Samaritan’s Purse has expanded its operations by offering crisis response, disaster services, and medical care to individuals in need. Since its establishment, Samaritan’s Purse has been involved with a variety of projects, including the late 20th century famine in Somalia, the 2014 West African Ebola outbreak, and the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Headquartered in Boone, North Carolina, Samaritan’s Purse operates offices in nine countries and provides assistance to over 100 nations.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On August 24, 2022, Samaritan’s Purse’s travel vendor experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Samaritan’s Purse determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information. On November 11, 2022, Samaritan’s Purse began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The exact type of personal information has not been disclosed by Samaritan’s Purse. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:

  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license or identification card number
  • Financial information (e.g., credit or debit card number, security or access code, or password)
  • Account passwords or personal identification numbers
